Prophet Ibrahim
The friend of Allah (Khalilullah). Built the Kaaba with his son Ismail. His faith was tested with the command to sacrifice his son.
Searching for the Truth
Ibrahim grew up in a society of idol worshippers. Even as a young man, he questioned the worship of stars, the moon, and the sun, realizing that none of these could be the true God because they all set and changed. Through this rational journey, he arrived at the truth of monotheism — that only the Creator of the heavens and earth deserves worship.
“So when the night covered him [with darkness], he saw a star. He said, 'This is my lord.' But when it set, he said, 'I like not those that set.'”
Challenging the Idolaters
Ibrahim smashed the idols in the temple, leaving only the largest one intact, to prove to his people that their idols could not defend themselves. When confronted, he pointed to the largest idol and said, 'Ask him.' The people knew their idols could not speak, yet still refused to abandon them. As punishment, they threw Ibrahim into a massive fire.
“We said, 'O fire, be coolness and safety upon Ibrahim.'”
The Sacrifice
In the ultimate test of faith, Allah commanded Ibrahim in a dream to sacrifice his son. Ibrahim informed his son, who willingly submitted to Allah's command. As Ibrahim was about to carry out the sacrifice, Allah replaced his son with a ram and declared that Ibrahim had fulfilled the vision. This event is commemorated every year during Eid al-Adha.
“And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, 'O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice you, so see what you think.' He said, 'O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the patient.'”
Building the Kaaba
Ibrahim and his son Ismail raised the foundations of the Kaaba in Makkah, the first house of worship established for humanity. As they built it, they prayed for Allah to accept their effort and to make their descendants a Muslim nation. Ibrahim also established the rites of Hajj, calling people to make pilgrimage to this sacred house.
“And [mention] when Ibrahim was raising the foundations of the House and Ismail, [saying], 'Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.'”
