Prophet Dawud
داودعليه السلام
King and prophet who defeated Jalut (Goliath). Received the Zabur (Psalms). Known for his beautiful voice in praising Allah and his just rule.
Defeating Jalut (Goliath)
As a young man in the army of Talut (Saul), Dawud faced the giant warrior Jalut (Goliath) when others feared to fight. With Allah's permission, Dawud killed Jalut, demonstrating that victory comes from Allah, not from physical strength or numbers. This victory earned him great honor among the Israelites.
فَهَزَمُوهُم بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ وَقَتَلَ دَاوُودُ جَالُوتَ وَآتَاهُ اللَّهُ الْمُلْكَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ
“So they defeated them by permission of Allah, and Dawud killed Jalut, and Allah gave him the kingship and wisdom.”
The Zabur (Psalms)
Allah gave Dawud the Zabur (Psalms), a scripture of praise, wisdom, and prayer. He was blessed with an extraordinarily beautiful voice — when he recited the Zabur, the mountains and birds would join him in glorifying Allah. Iron was made soft in his hands, allowing him to craft armor.
“And We certainly gave Dawud from Us bounty. [We said], 'O mountains, repeat [Our] praises with him, and the birds [as well].' And We made pliable for him iron.”
Just Ruler
Dawud combined prophethood with kingship, ruling with justice and wisdom. He is praised in the Quran as one who turned to Allah frequently. He would fast every other day, which the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described as the most beloved fasting to Allah.
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The most beloved fasting to Allah is the fasting of Dawud — he would fast one day and not fast the next.'
