Prophet Hud
Sent to the people of 'Ad in ancient Arabia. They were a mighty civilization destroyed by a fierce wind after rejecting his message.
The Mighty Civilization of 'Ad
The people of 'Ad were a powerful civilization in southern Arabia (modern-day Yemen/Oman region). They built impressive structures and were known for their physical strength. They considered themselves invincible and asked arrogantly, 'Who is mightier than us in strength?' They had deviated from the monotheism of Nuh and began worshipping idols.
“Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Ad — [the city of] Iram, with its lofty pillars, the likes of which had never been created in the land?”
Hud's Message
Hud called his people to abandon their idols and worship Allah alone. He reminded them of the blessings Allah had given them — strength, prosperity, gardens, and springs. He warned them that if they did not repent, they would face a severe punishment. But they accused him of being foolish and a liar.
“And to 'Ad [We sent] their brother Hud. He said, 'O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him.'”
Destruction by a Furious Wind
When they persisted in their rejection, Allah sent upon them a violent, barren wind that lasted for seven nights and eight days. It destroyed everything in its path, leaving the people of 'Ad like hollow palm trunks. Only Hud and the believers were saved.
“So We sent upon them a screaming wind during days of misfortune to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in worldly life.”
