Prophet Harun
هارونعليه السلام
Brother of Musa and his assistant in the mission to Pharaoh. Known for his eloquence and gentle nature. He served as prophet alongside Musa.
Appointed as Musa's Support
When Musa was commanded to confront Pharaoh, he asked Allah to appoint his brother Harun as his helper, citing Harun's greater eloquence. Allah granted this request, making Harun a prophet and partner in the mission. This highlights the Islamic principle that seeking help is a sign of wisdom, not weakness.
وَأَخِي هَارُونُ هُوَ أَفْصَحُ مِنِّي لِسَانًا فَأَرْسِلْهُ مَعِيَ رِدْءًا يُصَدِّقُنِي
“And my brother Harun — he is more fluent than me in tongue, so send him with me as support, verifying me.”
During Musa's Absence
When Musa went to Mount Sinai for forty days, he left Harun in charge of the Israelites. During this time, Samiri misled the people into worshipping a golden calf. Harun tried to stop them but was overpowered by the majority. When Musa returned and rebuked him, Harun explained that the people had nearly killed him and he feared causing division.
قَالَ ابْنَ أُمَّ إِنَّ الْقَوْمَ اسْتَضْعَفُونِي وَكَادُوا يَقْتُلُونَنِي
“He said, 'O son of my mother, indeed the people overpowered me and were about to kill me.'”
A Beloved Prophet
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ spoke of Harun with great respect, once telling Ali ibn Abi Talib, 'You are to me as Harun was to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me.' Harun was beloved by the Israelites for his gentle and compassionate nature.
The Prophet ﷺ said to Ali: 'You are to me as Harun was to Musa, except that there is no prophet after me.'
